Be Prepared for Spring Rains

Spring rains are a welcome part of the seasonal cycle, helping to jumpstart growth and restore vibrant shades of green to grass and trees.

Keep in mind, however, that heavy rains can trigger issues around your home. So in order to avoid water damage or flooding issues this spring, it's essential to make sure your gutters are prepared to handle heavy downpours. Check out this spring gutter checklist from professional service providers, The Brothers That Just Do Gutters.

Clear out debris.

After the winter season, it's very likely that your gutters served as the receptacle for debris. Be sure to inspect them carefully and remove leaves, twigs and dirt that could cause blockages and overflow.

Check downspouts.

Harsh weather, extreme winds or unwanted critters might have disrupted your downspouts over the winter season. Take some time to inspect them, ensuring they are still intact and directing water away from your foundation.

Inspect for leaks.

A crack in your gutter joints or seams could lead to troublesome leaks during rainfalls. Carefully survey gutters and apply sealant if you come across any cracks.

Secure loose fasteners.

If gutters and downspouts aren't securely fastened to your home, they may be at risk of becoming dislodged during storms. Inspect them carefully and tighten brackets and hangers to keep gutters properly attached.

Trim branches.

Before leaves are fully out, survey the trees around your home to see if any branches are hanging over your gutters. Cut them back to prevent leaves and debris from building up and causing a clog. Remember to hire a professional for any precarious branch-cutting job.

Consider gutter guards.

Talk to a professional about having gutter guards installed. This will help to keep your gutters functioning well year-round and reduce your maintenance responsibilities.

Hire a professional.

You could also choose to leave gutter maintenance to the professionals, arranging for regular inspection and clean-up so that your gutters remain in peak condition year-round.
